I have refused to be identified with the name, for as a weapon of dividing the Muslims, it’s the worst calamity that has befallen us. I am a Muslim who strives to adhere to the Quran and Sunnah, and that’s enough description for any Omoluabi like me.
I am however aware that, amongst those who identify with the name salafiyah are sincere Muslims who truly adhere to the principles of the doctrine. They’re not stereotyped to break the fabric of the Ummah. Rather, they sincerely aim at practicing the Deen as exemplified by the Muslim forebears; and they do this within the limit of their capability. May Allah reward them.
But I am also aware of some Muslims who also identify with the name salafiyah, but seek to sow the seed of discord and dissension amongst Muslims. They set brothers against one another and banish Muslims, carriers of the kalmah, from the fold of Islam, with the flimsy allegation of Bid’ah. This set of Salafists are terrible humans who need our help.
It will be unfair indeed to treat the two types of Salafists in the same manner. While the former may be truly identified with salafiyah as exemplified by the early Muslims; the latter should rather be proclaimed, henceforth, as the MODERN SALAFS. They’re Modern Salafs because they have nothing to offer this Ummah but discord and ill feelings.
It’s quite unfortunate that both Dr. Nurudeen Fadhlu Al-Imam and Dr. Sharaf Gbadebo Raji have allowed themselves to be cheaply used by those who have nothing to offer the Deen; but indeed, have a mission to disintegrate the Ummah.
These MODERN SALAFS are well skilled in the use of both emotional blackmail (الابتزاز العاطفي) and propaganda (دعاية) as weapons of compelling, seducing and influencing their victims to either succumb to their creedal whims or vacate the space for them to reign.
Paperweight scholars who crave for relevance and acceptance have no other option than to fall victims to the Jewish mesh set by the MODERN SALAFS; for they fear the insults, false allegation, vilification, stigmatization, demotion, and outright ex-communication, with probable humiliation that follows. Thus, it takes only a sincere mind to withstand this emotional blackmail.
This is exactly what the MODERN SALAFS aimed at inflicting on Dr. Siraajudeen Bilaal Asra’u, a scholar per excellence, who was quick in his early days to learn from Oluko agba, his reformist teacher, as he is quick to clarify issues for us today. While others kept mute for the fear of being blackmailed, he hurriedly proclaimed the truth; and true to his name, he became the fastest and quickest symbol of the truth – Al-Asra’u (الاسرع). May Allah preserve him.
Both the Ikhwaanis and the Tablighis are not heretics, after all. These are mere dawah organizations. Their members are people of Sunnah, like others. Albeit, every human effort channeled at dawah must have a pitfall, including Salafiyah, this doesn’t diminish the truth of the effort. After all, human beings who champion the cause are not perfect, even if the message is perfect!
May Allah reward Dr. Bilaal Asra’u, as he sieved the truth from falsehood. My empathy, however, goes to my two brothers, Fadhlu Al-Imam and Sharaf Gbadebo who, for the fear of being roasted alive, betrayed friendship, comradeship, and brotherly familiarity.
Didn’t Sharaf know that his brother was a heretic before he invited him to the wedding? Didn’t Fadhlu Al-Imam also know that his brother is a deviant when he praised him at the wedding? But when the boys, their children’s age mates, threatened to blackmail them for inviting and praising a fellow Muslim, they quickly looked for an excuse to malign his dignity. Ahhh!!… فانتظر الساعة Expect the judgment day!
Anyway, in a one-on-one discussion with Dr. Asra’u, I have already counseled that he may not have to respond to the shenanigan. I will however be glad to resume the battle with those who want the Ummah disintegrated. I wish I could resist the temptation to write this, but I have written it anyway.
However, I must confess that each time I react to the vacant words of the MODERN SALAFS, I feel distressed that I respond to what holds no value. May Allah bring the Ummah together. May Allah keep strengthening Dr. Siraajudeen Bilaal Asra’u and all our teachers who stand for the truth. May Allah guide the MODERN SALAFS to that which is right. May Allah rectify my own affairs too.
